    Yemini Defense Minister Survives Attack

A suicide bomber and militants with hand-grenades attacked Ali’s convoy, near the southern city of Aden. At least three soldiers were killed and nine others injured. The convoy was attacked as it exited a tunnel. Major General Ali was staying in Aden during a visit to the south; where militants have already claimed three cities. The army is trying to regain the territory.

Yemen is currently under quite a bit of upheaval; including fighting between political factions and an al-Qaeda militant group in the south.  Most recently, Saleh, left the country.

How not to be a victim of Terrorism

Terrorism has been around for a long time. It has left a very ugly scar on all the victims it has claimed. Today, people might think that terrorists are human beings who can destroy the whole world in a single explosive. However, this is not true at all. They are ‘ordinary’ people just like us but the only difference is their views of life. From their own perspective, they want to change the world by annihilating all bad and weak individuals that disagree with their views or religion.

For individuals, becoming a victim from a terrorist attack can be devastating. Although, people who are drawn into terrorism focus on examining their victims and taking advantage of their weaknesses. In order not become a victim, avoid the predictable routine, such as socialization which is being used on us as terrorism tactics. We can not prevent terrorism but we can avoid it by taking control over predictability.

    Evil walks Differently: Cameras know

Counter-terrorism and law enforcement have long relied on video surveillance as an essential tool. However, it has limitations. One of the biggest challenges is programming software to recognize specific people in variable conditions; such as low light, cluttered backgrounds, or when they shave beards.

Associate computer science professor Chris Bregler is studying whether  security threats can be identified by the way they walk. Using the same motion capture technology used in The Lord of the Rings information is currently being loaded into computer to compile a large database.

So how does this actually work?

    • A person with explosives strapped to their chest will have an uneven gait and thus move differently than someone with no explosives.
    • A person unused to carrying a  backpack has his feet strike the ground at different intervals than a person accustomed to the weight.

Of course, right now this technology is still in the laboratory. But one day we should see it hit the streets.

    al-Shabaab barring aid to Somalia

The rain failed for a second year, cattle died, families marched for weeks to escape famine and still al-Shabaab either actively restricts aid or imposes highly restrictive rules to aid operations.  Amnesty International reports that al-Shabaab demanded the destitute should “depend on God” instead of taking aid from the “infidels.” Almost 2.2 million Somali’s are in territory controlled by the known terrorist organization.

The US is currently engaged in providing aid to the Horn of Africa, to the tune of 580 million dollars, to meet the urgent humanitarian crisis. About 92 million dollars is going directly to Somalia. However, a great deal depends on whether al-Shabaab will let the assistance pass.

    15 years for Bashir

Five years ago, cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was acquitted of killing 202 people in a bombing in Bali. Today, he is sentenced to 15 years ,in prison, for funding terrorism. This is the first conviction for Bashir, 72.

The trial took place under heavy security and much press interest. Approximately 3000 troops guarded the courthouse today and more were distributed throughout the country. Bashir’s  supporters were outside the courthouse to show support. Bashir’s lawyers, of course, states he will appeal.

The Indonesian government is pleased with the 15 year sentence, believing it is appropriate for the crimes he committed. There is a chance Bashir could have the sentence reduced through further court proceedings.

    Bio-chemical Explosive Detector being developed

The 241st National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society or ACS has announced the development of a bio-chemical explosive detector and neutralizer. Initial tests were begun by scientists and had extremely successful experiments. The material has a spray effect that can identify several terrorist explosives. It is significantly used in government restricted areas such as aircrafts that carries hazardous chemicals.

According to the head chairman of the study, Allen Apblett, Ph.D., the device can save hundreds of lives since it can function in places that explosives are popularly utilized by terrorists. It can prevent possible explosions in public places.

Such places could be subways, airports and battlefields. It is made from an ink-formula that changes color when near explosives. This informative and valuable research could vitally help the safety and security of every individual.

    Israel and Palestine…Peaceful Resistance

The disagreement between Israel and Palestine is well-known and I don’t intend to rehash it here.  The news is filled reports of the armed conflict, failed peace negotiations, and residents displaced from their homes.  It is easy to get the impression that no one in the region is interested in a peaceful resolution. It’s also easy to get the idea that everyone carries a gun, just waiting to shoot someone of a different ethnicity.

While, cognitively, we know this must not be the case, it is rarely seen on the news. However, on the Palestinian side of the wall, peaceful graffiti has sprung up encouraging the dismantling of the wall. I find it encouraging to see signs of peaceful resistance in an area that is historically violent. I KNEW it existed!

Terrorist Held in NY without Bail

The man accused of lying about a failed plot to join the U.S. military and team up with insurgents in Iraq was jailed without bail in his first court appearance Tuesday since his arrest last month.

21-year-old Abdel Hameed Shehadeh,  from Staten Island, was arrested in Hawaii and brought back to New York to answer the charges that he tried to join the U.S. military at a Times Square recruiting station so he could he could be deployed to Iraq, desert and fight with anti-American insurgency forces – after he had tried unsuccessfully to travel to Pakistan, Jordan and Somalia.

So – should he have been accepted by the military (which he wasnt) he would have not only received training, weapons and quite a few secrets (most of which terrorists probably already know, but its the principle of it). He would possibly have gained the trust of quite a few of his peers, and then betrayed them…

What if they stationed him in Guam?
